Subaru Awarded Gold for PRIDE Index 2023
Subaru was awarded a Gold rating for the 2023 PRIDE Index*1 program on November 7, 2023. The program was created by the general incorporated association “work with Pride”*2 as a way to recognize the work being done on inclusion of gender minorities by Japanese companies. Gold is the highest level awarded by the program.
To properly educate all Subaru employees about gender diversity, the Company organizes employee awareness-raising activities and provides programs for gaining new LGBTQ allies (supporters). Specifically, training designed to provide a more in-depth understanding of LGBTQ+ issues has been progressively expanded in scope, extending to all employees in 2023 (including new employees and Group company employees). The Company has also worked on new awareness-raising activities such as providing rainbow-themed menu options in employee cafeterias for Pride Month in June, and taking part in the Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2023 as a member of the LGBT-Ally Project. Subaru has been an active supporter of human rights for many years, creating and releasing a Human Rights Policy that bans discrimination based on gender, gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation. The Company has also accommodated employees in same-sex or common-law marriages by recognizing their right to receive the same allowance paid to other employees for a wedding, birth or death, the same access to Company housing, and the same welfare benefits and services. The PRIDE Index Gold rating was awarded in recognition of Subaru’s work on this wide array of LGBTQ inclusion efforts throughout the year.
To ensure that we keep producing our unique brand of value well into the future, Subaru will continue to respect diversity in areas such as nationality, culture and lifestyle. We will provide welcoming workplace environments designed to maximize the individual potential of employees possessing a diverse range of characteristics and values.
*1: The first index created in Japan to assess the LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts of companies and other organizations. Created by work with Pride in 2016 as a way to ensure LGBTQ+ friendly workplaces in Japan.
The assessment is composed of five indexes that make up the PRIDE acronym: “Policy” (declaration of action), “Representation” (inclusion of community members), “Inspiration” (awareness-raising activities), “Development” (HR systems and programs), and “Engagement/Empowerment” (giving back to the community and PR activities). Points are awarded to companies and other organizations that satisfy the requirements specified for each index. Gold, Silver or Bronze certifications are awarded in accordance with the total point.
*2: A general incorporated association that works to help companies and other organizations encourage and popularize diversity management for the LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other gender minorities).
