Subaru of America, Inc., a sales subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., introduced the new Subaru Baja targeted for the North American market at the North American International Auto Show on January 7, 2002 (U.S. Eastern Time).

The new Subaru Baja evolved from the ST-X concept, which was demonstrated at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2000. It is a new breed of crossover vehicle that blends the feeling of freedom and ruggedness of a compact four-door pickup truck with the driving dynamics, safety, and comfort of a passenger car.

The model featuring a 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed, four-cylinder SOHC engine is based on the highly successful Subaru Legacy/Outback platform and all-wheel drive system, and arrives in Subaru dealerships in North America as a 2003 model in the fall of 2002.
