Subaru Records Best Year in the U.S. in History

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and maker of Subaru automobiles, announced that Subaru has recorded its best total sales result on record, posting a sales total of 185,944 units in the United States. The previous record of 183,242 units was set in 1986. The year-end 2001 tally represents an eight percent increase from year-end 2000 totals for the comparable period.

Subaru Legacy led the 2001 totals with 95,291 units posted. Subaru Impreza established a new sales record of 35,612 total units, up a remarkable 85% from the previous year. Subaru Forester recorded a total of 55,041 total unit sales.

All Subaru products now on the U.S. market are all-wheel drive vehicles, and the record sales have come from the wide recognition in the U.S. of Subaru's advanced AWD technology. The new Impreza WRX, introduced in March 2001, has been highly evaluated for its excellent driving performance facilitated by its high-power turbo engine and its AWD system and has enjoyed strong sales significantly contributing to Subaru's sales expansion in the U.S.

Subaru vehicles have been marketed in the U.S. by Subaru of America, Inc. (established in 1968), a subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. There are nearly 600 dealers nationwide. Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc., a joint venture with Isuzu Motors Ltd., produces Subaru Legacy/Outback for the U.S. market.
