Here, we examine unit sales on a consolidated basis for first half of fiscal 2006, the year to end March 2007.
For domestically registered passenger cars, declines were recorded for all types. For the Legacy, after undergoing a major face lift, sales of the turbocharged and six-cylinder models, featuring the installation of SI-Drive, charted increases. But all other Legacy models struggled, and dragged down results by 2.5 thousand units compared to the first half of fiscal 2006. Sales of the Impreza also declined from the first half of the previous year, falling by 3 thousand units, while the Forester was off by 2.8 thousand units. This brought the total decrease to 8.8 thousand units.
For minicar sales, the Pleo was down by 7.8 thousand units, the R2 by 5.9 thousand units, the R1 by 1.1 thousand units and the Sambar by 2 thousand units. However, with sales of the new Stella soaring to a gain of 23.6 thousand units, this category finished up by 6.8 thousand units. In the final tally, therefore, first half sales dropped by 2 thousand units.
Overseas, on the U.S. market, first-half Legacy sales declined by 1.3 thousand units, and Forester sales were off by 4.3 thousand units. On a brighter note, the Impreza, which enjoys high popularity as a compact passenger car, boosted sales by 5.7 thousand units, supporting a total gain of 0.1 thousand units in the U.S. In Canada, sales rose by 0.8 thousand units on the strength of gains by the Impreza and Forester. The European market was also supported by steady demand for the Impreza and Forester, with sales there rising by 1.7 thousand units. In Australia, all models finished in positive territory, boosting sales by 1.5 thousand units. In other regions, sales finished solid in China, Singapore and other markets, accounting for growth of 2.2 thousand units. In total, overseas sales of Subaru vehicles were up by 6.3 thousand units for the first half. Subtracting the 2 thousand-unit decrease in Japan, overall combined sales rose by 4.4 thousand units for the six-month period.
